Your challenge
You love the character of older pieces, but you still want your home to reflect modern-day you. To master this mix, you will want to incorporate unique secondhand finds from a range of design eras. When shopping for antique accent pieces like picture frames, rugs or mirrors, look for items that show their age. For example a gold frame can look gaudy when it looks brand new, but a frame with chips and scuffs has charm. A well-worn Persian rug has much more character than a new rug from Overstock - imperfections can be beautiful!
To keep this looking fresh and modern, it’s key to mix in pieces that have contemporary shapes or patterns. For example, the lampshades in the room below feel contemporary.
Similarly, the bold checkerboard pattern of the textile hanging on the wall may be old but it feels modern.
